Beloved Books becoming Films // The English Patient

The English Patient is one of the most passionate and heartbreaking love stories I have ever seen! It was imprinted so deep in my mind that I still think of it with sadness. Personal side note: It was the first movie that Duke and I watched together, when we started dating, back in 1997! This is another reason that I will never forget the tension this movie caused me...

Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas were the perfect lovers, they had a great chemistry, and Juliette Binoche was that sweet note in the bitterness of war, the light in the darkness, the smile among the tears.

Plot: At the close of World War II, a young nurse tends to a badly-burned plane crash victim. His past is shown in flashbacks, revealing an involvement in a fateful love affair.

Count Laszlo de Almasy ( Ralph Fiennes) after his severe accident with his nurse, Hana (Juliette Binoche)

Hana and Kip, the bomb disarming specialist

Caravaggio, the thief that worked for the British as a spy during the WWII (Willem Dafoe)

Geoffrey and Katherine Clifton

And let the affair begin...

The Count is carrying wounded Katherine to the cave

Inside the cave

The lovers in bed

Hana watching Kip having a shower at the backyard...

The breakup scene

Unfortunately, this time there in not much I can tell you about the book, because I haven't read it! Yet! According to Wikipedia, The English Patient is a 1992 novel by Sri Lankan-Canadian novelist Michael Ondaatje. The story deals with the gradually revealed stories of an severely injured Hungarian man, his nurse, a thief/spy, and an Indian sapper as they live out the end of World War II in an abandoned Italian villa. The novel won the Canadian Governor General's Award and the Booker Prize for fiction.
